Herpes Infection Treatment

What is a Herpes Infection?

Herpes is a common viral infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). There are two main types: HSV-1, which commonly causes oral herpes (cold sores around the mouth), and HSV-2, which primarily causes genital herpes. Both types can infect the mouth, lips, face, genital area, and surrounding skin through direct contact with an infected person.

FAQs

Herpes is a viral infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). HSV-1 commonly causes oral herpes (cold sores), while HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes, although either virus can affect both areas.
Herpes spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, including kissing, oral, vaginal, or anal sexual contact, and in some cases from mother to baby during childbirth.
Common symptoms include painful blisters or sores around the mouth or genital area, itching, burning, tingling sensations, swelling, and occasionally flu-like symptoms such as fever and swollen lymph nodes.
There is currently no permanent cure for herpes. However, antiviral medications can effectively control symptoms, shorten outbreaks, reduce recurrence, and lower the risk of transmission.
Diagnosis is usually made through a clinical examination along with laboratory tests such as swab testing of active sores, viral testing, or blood tests that detect HSV antibodies.
